Every business, however complicated it looks from outside, comes down to the same short chain. Someone pays a price, and that payment is revenue. Costs come out of it. What remains is split between taxes, the owner's pay and money kept for the business. The chain runs once for every customer, so the whole business is that chain repeated as many times as customers can be found.
The book follows that chain from start to finish. Chapter 1 explains why numbers belong at the start of any plan. Chapter 2 separates revenue, costs and what an owner actually keeps. Chapter 3 turns a revenue goal into a count of customers, and chapter 4 turns that count into the number of people who must be contacted. Chapter 5 covers startup costs and the break-even point, and chapter 6 covers the timing of cash.
Chapter 7 looks at what government data say about how many one-person businesses exist and how many new businesses survive. Chapter 8 offers a scorecard for comparing ideas on equal terms. Chapter 9 describes a thirty-day test that costs very little. Chapter 10 puts the steps into a four-week plan.
Two notes on how to read the book. First, every example uses round numbers so the arithmetic is easy to follow, and real businesses will differ. Second, the word UNKNOWN appears on purpose. When no source supports a number, writing UNKNOWN is more useful than guessing, and it turns the blank into a research task.
